I spread your idea because

Ideas spread when people to choose to spread them. Here are some reasons why:

  1. I spread your idea because it makes me feel generous.
  2. …because I feel smart alerting others to what I discovered.
  3. …because I care about the outcome and want you (the creator of the idea) to succeed.
  4. …because I have no choice. Every time I use your product, I spread the idea (Hotmail, iPad, a tattoo).
  5. …because there’s a financial benefit directly to me (Amazon affiliates, mlm).
  6. …because it’s funny and laughing alone is no fun.
  7. …because I’m lonely and sharing an idea solves that problem, at least for a while.
  8. …because I’m angry and I want to enlist others in my outrage (or in shutting you down).
  9. …because both my friend and I will benefit if I share the idea (Groupon).
  10. …because you asked me to, and it’s hard to say no to you.
  11. …because I can use the idea to introduce people to one another, and making a match is both fun in the short run and community-building.
  12. …because your service works better if all my friends use it (email, Facebook).
  13. …because if everyone knew this idea, I’d be happier.
  14. …because your idea says something that I have trouble saying directly (AA, a blog post, a book).
  15. …because I care about someone and this idea will make them happier or healthier.
  16. …because it’s fun to make another teen snicker about prurient stuff we’re not supposed to see.
  17. …because the tribe needs to know about this if we’re going to avoid an external threat.
  18. …because the tribe needs to know about this if we’re going to maintain internal order.
  19. …because it’s my job.
  20. I spread your idea because I’m in awe of your art and the only way I can repay you is to share that art with others.

Where do ideas come from ?

  1. Ideas don’t come from watching television
  2. Ideas sometimes come from listening to a lecture
  3. Ideas often come while reading a book
  4. Good ideas come from bad ideas, but only if there are enough of them
  5. Ideas hate conference rooms, particularly conference rooms where there is a history of criticism, personal attacks or boredom
  6. Ideas occur when dissimilar universes collide
  7. Ideas often strive to meet expectations. If people expect them to appear, they do
  8. Ideas fear experts, but they adore beginner’s mind. A little awareness is a good thing
  9. Ideas come in spurts, until you get frightened. Willie Nelson wrote three of his biggest hits in one week
  10. Ideas come from trouble
  11. Ideas come from our ego, and they do their best when they’re generous and selfless
  12. Ideas come from nature
  13. Sometimes ideas come from fear (usually in movies) but often they come from confidence
  14. Useful ideas come from being awake, alert enough to actually notice
  15. Though sometimes ideas sneak in when we’re asleep and too numb to be afraid
  16. Ideas come out of the corner of the eye, or in the shower, when we’re not trying
  17. Mediocre ideas enjoy copying what happens to be working right this minute
  18. Bigger ideas leapfrog the mediocre ones
  19. Ideas don’t need a passport, and often cross borders (of all kinds) with impunity
  20. An idea must come from somewhere, because if it merely stays where it is and doesn’t join us here, it’s hidden. And hidden ideas don’t ship, have no influence, no intersection with the market. They die, alone.

Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an African American civil rights activist, whom the U.S. Congress later called “the first lady of civil rights”, and “the mother of the freedom movement”.[1]

On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks, age 42, refused to obey bus driver James Blake‘s order that she give up her seat to make room for a white passenger.

Parks’ act of defiance became an important symbol of the modern Civil Rights Movement and Parks became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation. She organized and collaborated with civil rights leaders, including boycott leader Martin Luther King, Jr., helping to launch him to national prominence in the civil rights movement.

When Parks refused to give up her seat, a police officer arrested her. As the officer took her away, she recalled that she asked, “Why do you push us around?” The officer’s response as she remembered it was, “I don’t know, but the law’s the law, and you’re under arrest.” She later said, “I only knew that, as I was being arrested, that it was the very last time that I would ever ride in humiliation of this kind.”[22]

Almost 55 years ago, Rosa Parks decided that enough was enough and her courageous decision changed the course of her life and the course of the lives of many others after that day.

Are you ready to make a Rosa Parks decision?

When you do, you could help trigger a vast process of change.

That was the day when her life began…

When will yours begin?

Reasons to work

  1. For the money
  2. To be challenged
  3. For the pleasure/calling of doing the work
  4. For the impact it makes on the world
  5. For the reputation you build in the community
  6. To solve interesting problems
  7. To be part of a group and to experience the mission
  8. To be appreciated

Why do we always focus on the first? Why do we advertise jobs or promotions as being generic on items 2 through 8 and differentiated only by #1?

In fact, unless you’re a drug kingpin or a Wall Street trader, my guess is that the other factors are at work every time you think about your work.

In other words, start and see what will happen…but do something now.

“Instead of concerning ourselves with what will come tomorrow, we should be thankful for what we have today, which is good health for most of us, a roof over our heads, food to fill our stomachs and free time to enjoy with our family and friends. This does not mean that we should not plan for tomorrow. It just means that we should not let it control us to the point where it takes us away from what we are able to do today.”

“Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils”

Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) French composer

________________________________________________________________________________

Time is a great teacher when we dare to make mistakes.

Time is a greater and more effective teacher when we accept to learn from our mistakes.

Time is the greatest and wisest teacher when we learn from the mistakes of others and avoid to make them ourselves.

Time will eventually kill all of us, and since we don’t know when, one of the most important lessons Time can teach us is:  To live each day to the fullest..

What did Time teach you recently?

What would you do differently if you learned that you had 3 months left to live?

Oh really!

Why wait?

“Life, as it is called, is for most of us one long postponement.”

Henry Miller

I believe this is so true… Do something, go somewhere, meet new and different people, work on a project, learn something new and move it, move it.

    Did you move it recently?

Whatever you think you should be moving…

Though it’s not impossible to hate what you do and be good at it, it’s rare. Not to mention, it’s not much of a life (which if I may remind you, is short) .

A lot of people talk about time management. There is no such thing as time management. We cannot manage time. We can only manage ourselves.Time manages itself very well without us.

We should talk about life management in relation with the time that is given to each one of us. This starts with checking on our priorities.

Did you clarify your priorities recently?

Will you take time to live this coming week-end?

Will you take time to do something for yourself?

Will you take time to do something for someone else?

    It’s time for action!

P.S. Sometimes relaxation is the right thing to do…

    I think laziness has changed.

It used to be about avoiding physical labor. The lazy person could nap or have a cup of tea while others got hot and sweaty and exhausted. Part of the reason society frowns on the lazy is that this behavior means more work for the rest of us.

When it came time to carry the canoe over the portage, I was always hard to find. The effort and the pain gave me two good reasons to be lazy.

But the new laziness has nothing to do with physical labor and everything to do with fear. If you’re not going to make those sales calls or invent that innovation or push that insight, you’re not avoiding it because you need physical rest. You’re hiding out because you’re afraid of expending emotional labor.

This is great news, because it’s much easier to become brave about extending yourself than it is to become strong enough to haul an eighty pound canoe.

An enterprising person is one who comes across a pile of scrap metal and sees the making of a wonderful sculpture. An enterprising person is one who drives through an old decrepit part of town and sees a new housing development. An enterprising person is one who sees opportunity in all areas of life.

To be enterprising is to keep your eyes open and your mind active. It’s to be skilled enough, confident enough, creative enough and disciplined enough to seize opportunities that present themselves… regardless of the economy.

    Are you an enterprising person?

“Let today be a day to spend time alone in nature, if possible. Take a walk as far from the hustle and bustle as you can. Take off your shoes and walk barefoot in the grass to reconnect with nature.”

Did you ever add up the time you spend browsing the net, going on Facebook, Youtube and Linkedin?

According to recent surveys, more than 500 million people spend 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook.  700 billion minutes…

The Internet can save us a lot of time when we search for something useful for our job or for school. We can also pay our bills, do our banking online and do a lot of other useful tasks. There are lots of benefits of using the web but we must discipline ourselves to use our time wisely. It is tempting to go on the Internet and spend an hour to look at random stuff.  We must check our habits and set boundaries to avoid wasting precious time.

We all have 168 hours every week. How many of these hours do you invest or waste on the Web?

Donna Karan had planned to be a stay-at-home mom, but when her boss and mentor, Anne Klein, passed away, Donna stepped up and created a line just days after her daughter was born. And guess what?   It has been a huge success…

Life is similar to lying in bed; it’s easier to hit snooze and delay what you must do.

Whenever you get that hit-the-snooze feeling, try do go against your natural response, try to get out of your comfort zone. Sometimes it is as hard to  do what we must do as it is to get out of bed in the morning.

No more delay. No more hesitation. Stand up and start your life.

    Are you ready?

Do you prefer to watch ” Property Virgins” or to invest your time taking care of  your own property?

Do you prefer to watch a “NHL game” or to go play hockey with your friends?

Do you prefer to live your life or watch other people live their own?

Personally I prefer the acting part…because life is in the living.

    What do you prefer?

This is risky business! But when we are convinced that our ideas are the right ones, we must fight for them. Just think of Galileo, Martin Luther, Gandhi, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King…

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.”

“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”

    Mother Teresa

    _____________________________________________________________________

When we jugde people, we waste our time and we hurt other people’s feelings. I have never seen any good coming out of it when I found myself guilty of judging others. I have never seen any good when I witness others judging others.

So my question to you is; why do we keep falling in this trap?

    Two problems with whining

The first is that it doesn’t work. You can whine about the government or your friends or your job or your family, but nothing will happen except that you’ll waste time.

Worse… far worse… is that whining is a reverse placebo. When you get good at whining, you start noticing evidence that makes your whining more true. So you amplify that and immerse yourself in it, thus creating more evidence, more stuff worth complaining about.

If you spent the same time prattling on about how optimistic you are, you’d have to work hard to make that true…

“To live is to choose. But to choose well, you must know who you are and what you stand for, where you want to go and why you want to get there.”

    Kofi Annan

    ______________________________________________________________________

It’s not always easy to choose because we must take responsibility for our choices. In my opinion, when we choose for ourselves, we increase our own personal  freedom  and we cannot blame others for what happens or what doesn’t happen to us.

Another difficulty with choosing is that when we say YES to one thing, we are saying NO to another thing because our time and space are limited.
